Getting
involved with the Southlands Country Fair
As
the Country Fair approaches, there are lots of ways to get involved.
Contact Fair Coordinators Pippa
Emrick or Crissy
Barbata to be put in touch with the right individual at Southlands.
Country
Fair Volunteers
Country
Fair would not be the success that it is without its dedicated volunteers.
Every year we require about 250 volunteers. The majority of these
people are Southlands Riding Club and Vancouver Pony Club members.
However, we're always looking to expand our volunteer base.
You
can volunteer for the whole day, a half day, or for a 3 hour shift.
All volunteers receive a Country Fair t-shirt as well as free snacks
and lunch.
If
you would like to be a Country Fair volunteer please contact Wendy
Gilmour at wgilmour@bcinternet.net
or wendygilmour@shaw.ca
Book
and Thrift Sale
The
annual Country Fair Book and Thrift Sale offers some great
bargains! If you would like to donate items to the book or thrift
sale you may drop them off at the Southlands Riding Club clubhouse
or in the foyer if the clubhouse is locked.
The
Book Sale will take your surplus books, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes.
We welcome your donation of all thrift sale items EXCEPT CLOTHING.
Please make sure all items are clean and in good repair, and drop
them off in bags or boxes.
Pony
Rides
One
of the Fair's biggest draws is the Pony Rides. In the past
we have had problems with looooong line ups, but we think we have
figured out how to avoid that this year, with the introduction of
"sign up time slots". When you arrive at the Fair you
can go straight to the Pony Rides, put your name down, and you will
be given a time to come back for your pony ride. You can then go
and enjoy the fair and report back at your given time. A pony ride
is 3 tickets = $3.00
If
you're a local horse owner and interested in lending your pony for
the pony rides please contact Mirna Topic.
Bake
Sale and Kids' Baking Contest
The
Country Fair holds a Bake Sale and a Kids' Baking Contest
every year. The Bake Sale is one of our most popular events usually
selling out before the day is even half over.
The
Kids' Baking Contest is free to enter. It is judged at 12:00 noon.
Ribbons are awarded to the winners, and then the entries are sold
in the Bake Sale. To enter the baking contest, drop your baking
off on the morning of the Fair between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. Please
clearly label items with BAKING CONTEST and your NAME.
You
can also donate items to the bake sale by dropping your items off
on the morning of the Fair between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. Please clearly
label your items with BAKE SALE on it. Cakes are the best sellers!
Silent
Auction
The
Silent Auction is a great way to promote local businesses.
It takes place during the famous Hoe Down, a neighbourhood party
on the night before the Fair.
We
are always looking for unique items for the auction, and this year
we're also hoping for donations of "opportunities", such
as trail rides, private tours of art galleries, aquariums, or race
tracks, or the chance to stay at your vacation cabin. So if you
have any ideas, have items you would like to donate, or know of
a business that would like to donate please contact Wendy Valdes.
